Nineteen Apprentices in Training as Ernest Doe Invests in Next Generation of Engineers
Family-owned dealership marks National Apprenticeship Week with 19 apprentices across 14 branches as interest builds for its 2026 intake.
Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd is marking National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting its continued investment in the next generation of land-based engineers, with 19 apprentices currently training across its branch network.

The family-owned machinery dealership, established in 1898, supports apprentices across 14 branches. Its most recent intake saw seven new starters join the business, beginning a structured three-year training programme that combines practical, workshop-based experience with formal college study.
Eighteen of the company’s apprentices are enrolled on the CNH Level 2 and 3 Land Based Service Engineering Technician programmes at Writtle College, attending on a block-release basis alongside their day-to-day roles within branch workshops. In addition, one apprentice is training through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) at the National Construction College (NCC) East England.
All apprentices are based at their respective branches, working within the service department under the guidance of an experienced mentor, typically the branch service manager or a senior technician. Throughout the three-year programme, they remain within their workshop teams, developing hands-on technical skills across agricultural and construction machinery while building their knowledge through formal training.
Apprenticeships have long played a central role in the Ernest Doe business. Notably, half of the company’s senior management team began their careers as apprentices, collectively representing more than 180 years of service.
Ken Smyth, General Service Manager at Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd, said:
“Apprenticeships are vital to the future of our industry and to the continued strength of our business. We are pleased to provide a clear and structured pathway into land-based engineering, giving young people the opportunity to gain practical experience in our workshops while working towards a recognised qualification at Writtle College.
Our apprentices are supported every step of the way by experienced colleagues within our branches. The fact that many of our senior leaders began their own careers as apprentices demonstrates the long-term opportunities available within Ernest Doe. We are investing not only in skills, but in future careers.”
With strong interest building, the company is already seeing demand for its September 2026 intake with several candidates on the waiting list. Prospective applicants who would like to be considered for future apprenticeship opportunities, or who would like further information, can email hr@ernestdoe.com. Apprenticeships are subject to availability within individual branches and college places.
