Celebrating its 60th anniversary next year, Breheny is one of the largest family-owned civil engineering companies in the UK.

Breheny Civil Engineering Ltd (BCE), well known for its’ heavy civils, infrastructure and technical works, identified a need to provide more conventional groundworks services in order to fully support existing clients. Terrasite Ltd, a groundworks specialist company was formed five years ago by John Breheny to compliment the services provided by the Breheny Group.

To meet the needs of the expanding work of the Breheny Group of Companies which also incorporates Networx Utilities, the company has recently invested over £1.5 million with Ernest Doe, as part of a renewal of existing fleet with modern equipment featuring Tier 5 engines.

Part of this order includes some 9 tonne Thwaites cabbed dumpers for Breheny Civils and a number of Hyundai HX140A L crawler excavators which will join the Terrasite fleet. A further 15 dumpers are on order and due for delivery late summer.

Safe, compliant and competitive, Thwaites dumpers are built to last and built to be the best. Thwaites 9 tonne Stage V dumpers are manufactured with contractors and hirers in mind – ensuring operator safety, reducing risk on site and improving performance. Powered by a 3.6L Deutz turbo diesel engine fitted with a DPF to comply with EU stage V emission regulations, with 55.4kW, 405Nm of torque and no AdBlue.

The HX140A L’s high-performance engine delivers better productivity and fuel efficiency while meeting EU Stage V emissions regulations.  Featuring a new tough exterior design with added safety features and greater serviceability, the HX140A L is built to perform in the toughest conditions on large construction sites and infrastructure projects.

Andrew Dobrucki, Breheny Plant Operations Manager, picks up the story: “We prefer to work with companies that reflect our own family ethos and Ernest Doe perfectly fits this model, as a family-owned business that has been operating for over 100 years. Both companies are closely aligned in their outlook and attitude to business and it makes for a good working relationship. We enjoy working with Nigel, our area sales manager, who is more accommodating to help us to meet our needs. Both Nigel and the wider Ernest Doe business work with us and their efforts to get the product right is always second to none – working with us to develop and listening to our needs to deliver something that is beneficial to the group and, ultimately, our customers.”

He continues: “They are a pleasure to work with in regard to after care and support as well as the aftersales side of things. The workshop manager Dave is great and they are generally a good team to work with. We all know that the product is one thing but the after products and support is equally important and, from our perspective, Ernest Doe deliver.”

So what was behind your decision to buy Thwaites and Hyundai products?

“We are loyal to Thwaites for dumpers because of the product – we have tried others but for the cabbed dumpers we consider them to be market leaders. For the Terrasite business, the Hyundai offers good value for money, both for the equipment but also the after sales support and Nigel is great at listening to suggestions and comments that are always actioned upon – the Hyundai offers a good product for what we require.”

With numerous live projects currently underway, the Hyundai excavators are currently out at work at Alder Meadow at Creeting St Mary for a residential development and the Thwaites dumpers are on sites and projects for Breheny Civil Engineering and Terrasite.
